Our recent two week vacation on the lovely Balearic Island of Menorca has left some wonderful memories for us and also plenty to write about. Although we visited last year there were plenty of places that had escaped us.

This year is was mostly hot, dry and sunny. When it was it was damn hot and the two days we had rain it did that to the extreme also.

We had a look at the island as we made the large yellow catamaran tour of the huge estuary. Of course this was just a look from the water as we sailed past. There had even been a rat island close by but that was blown up to make way for a canal. If the small rat infested island is visible on a picture it means the said image pre-dates the thirties.

We made or way down through Es Castell to the small harbour front where a boat takes visitors across. The Sunday we visited was hot and sunny and it seemed the whole world and its wife was going to visit the island. The first boat load had set off and we waited a few moments for its return.

It is only a short journey. The vessel is a most large type of motorised dinghy. The majority of passengers, including me sat along the outside edge. A few including hubby stood in the midst of the boat. It was not as hairy as it gets as it was calm seas and a short journey.

At least four boat loads were taken over plus the yellow catamaran brought a huge party of Germans from Mahon.

Bloody Island is well worth a visit. There are some rooms in what was the largest hospital that replica hospital wards, a church, more, and the pharmacy. The grounds are appealing and there are a number of great spots for snapping that perfect picture of the mainland.

If you live in Ohio you probably think Bigfoot is the last guy you are going to see while out for a ride in the forest. However, sightings of the elusive beast are on the increase in your state. It turns out Ohio is a favorite haunt of the great hairy guy. In fact, according to the BFRO Geographical Database, Ohio trails only such notorious Bigfoot hotspots as California, Oregon, Washington and Florida in reported sightings.

Bigfoot is also spotted in many other eastern states such as Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, and New York. This brings up more than some questions about how the creature remains hidden, evades capture and has dodged the errant bullets of hunters for so long.

It turns out Bigfoot may be smarter, stealthier and more resourceful that we ever imagined, and he may be hiding right in our backyards. Here's a look at the way the creature may be getting by in the state of Ohio.

For about 150 years Ohio residents have witnessed a creature called the Grassman lurking about rural farms and fields. The Grassman is a monster alleged to inhabit Ohio and Western Pennsylvania. Looking back at reports it is most surely a Sasquatch. The first sightings occurred in 1869, where witnesses described it as a large, hairy, bipedal creature up to nine feet tall.

Even the Native American populations in Ohio were in decline prior to this. In the 17thh century a combination of sickness and war with Iroquois tribes from the east had decimated many of the indigenous population. Eventually they would begin to recover.

Ohio was also beyond the Proclamation Line established in 1763 as a promise between the Native Americans and English to limit colonial expansion. This would hold off the population boom for still a few years.

What does all of that got to do with Bigfoot? It adds up to a long period of time before the European population began to explode, and allowed more time for Bigfoot to adapt to the existence of a large number of people living in his territory. Where big animals such as the black bear and eastern cougar were under pressure from the new colonists, Bigfoot would have enjoyed a relative period of peace in the Ohio territory.

In later decades the population of Ohio grew many times over. However, even though the current census is over eleven million much of the population is clustered around major cities. There are still a whole bunch of wood and farmland in Ohio where a creature like Bigfoot might live.

There are plenty of water sources nearby. The state is bordered in the countries of the south by the Ohio River, and in the far north by Lake Erie. Dozens of smaller rivers and tributaries run to each. This makes for great fishing and abundant food for a creature like Sasquatch.

In 1978 a family living near Minerva, Ohio, witnessed a 7-foot, hairy monster outside their home. Minerva, incidentally, is in eastern Ohio where many Bigfoot encounters have been reported. The family notified the local sheriff. The legend of the Minerva monster was born.

With increasing numbers of reports from Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and even the New England states, it appears there's a significant Bigfoot population in this part of the country. The Appalachians may provide a central area of security from which a relatively large population of Sasquatch could branch out into other adjacent states.

For a state like Ohio in particular, which seems to have the perfect combination of woodlands, wildlife, and water sources, it seems virtually impossible to imagine Bigfoot would not be present. After all, while Ohio is not nearly as remote, these are the same qualifications of the habitat in the Pacific Northwest.
